The Black Face series focused on the connection between material and historical perceptions of Black identity. The use of shoe polish as a material was key. The material has a storied history in the United States which was never reconciled.  Considering the gruesome history, the grotesque portrayals of Black men and women are codified as taboo without thorough contextual evidence.  the Minstrel Show installation and the Blackface series work to provide a glimpse into the ramifications of the historical cultural appropriation and parody of Black men and women.
